Couponing, saving at a normal speed

Ok, so now that there is a TV show about people that spend LOTS of time and stockpile (hoard) products that they were able to pick up for pennies or free by combining store sales and coupons there is a misconception about coupons.

First off coupons are meant to save you money on things you intend to purchase anyway and maybe sway your purchase to a certain brand. Unless you want to spend 20 -40 hours a week trying to clip all coupons you can find and then compare to the stores prices and make several trips to the store every week, remember to keep it simple.

Don’t build your list based on coupons, build your list based on needs and meal plans, then add the coupons. If you try to build a list around the coupons you have then you will spend more than you want and get things you don’t need.

You still want to make sure you compare products in the store. Make sure you are really getting the best deal by using the coupon and getting that specific brand, or if a store brand will still be cheaper without a coupon, try to store brand. This goes back to building your list on what you need, not the coupons.

Know your store’s policy on coupons, do they double, limit on the number of coupons used per transaction, etc. This is important to know for the actual costs of items as well as what you will be able to accomplish in one transaction.

Don’t get the Sunday paper, no problem. Go online (list of sites I use at the bottom of the post). There are tons of sites that will help you by providing couppons you can print out and even do some preshopping for you. There are sites (and phone apps) available to cross reference the coupons available and the store deals. These can be great if you are trying to stock up or are willing to shop multiple places.

The biggest thing to remember is that the shows on TV are showing people that do this for a living basically and their shopping trip is usually the bigeestes they have ever done, it is not their normal shopping trip. The stock piles tehy have maybe have taken years to build.

Start slow and get used to the idea and build the system that work for you and your family.

  • (this is actually online coupons that you activate based on your store savings card and never clip a coupon).

*Please Note* Many websites will actually have the same coupons available and often have a limit on the number of times you can print a coupon out.
